September 14th Worship Service
In Poland we walked through the horror of what were the concentration and death camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau where over 1.1 million people were put to death because of the political beliefs or their religion…and how “We Should Never Forget …So We Never Repeat.”
In Hungary we learned how the government is slowly and carefully being taken away from the people, and the moves the people are making to save their freedom. In Croatia and Slovenia we learned how the break-up of the Yugoslavia into five different countries, and ensuing war of aggression by Serbia ended up creating nations which have since found peace and are moving in positive directions.
The basic lesson everyone learned…we are all in this together, and we need to look out for and care for each other. They are in the process….at various levels….of creating societies which are accomplishing these goals.
In Numbers Chapter 24 the people complained about their time in desert versing God and Moses. Then the deadly serpents arrived and those bitten died. They went to Moses, repenting bout the attitudes and asked Moses to ask God to intervene. God told Moses to make a bronze serpent and place it on a pole where all could see it. Those who were bitten could look at the bronze serpent and they would not die.
In John 3:16 we are reminded that God sent His that we might be healed and would not experience death, but have eternal life in God’s kingdom. Today, this day, is truly a blessing and we need to take advantage of it, turning it into a day which brings God’s Kingdom closer to our lives.

I saw a sign in a restaurant near our hotel in Bled, Slovenia. It read “Yesterday is Gone, Tomorrow is a Mystery, But We Have the Gift of Today.” The sign reminds me that every day is a gift from God, and it is truly a blessing.
Traveling through five counties in Central Europe we saw a lot of history, much of it very difficult and painful. In the Czech Republic we learned about the peaceful over throw of the Soviet Union 1989, and how they remember and celebrate the removal of a dictatorship.
