This Week’s Service

November 8th Worship Service

On Wednesday November 11th we will celebrate Veterans’ Day.  It was known as Armistice Day until the names was changed to Veteran’s Day in 1954.  It is held on November 11th in remembrance of the end of World War I, based on major hostilities being formally ended on the 11th hour, of the 11day of the 11th month in 1918.  We need these remembrances to remind us of the devastation endured during these periods of war.

To our Europe neighbors these events are still with them, and every day they walk around realities of World Wars I and II.  In 2023 we were in eastern France.  .  Complete towns ceased to exist through 4 months of sustained shelling, unable to rebuild because of the unexploded ordinance they remain hidden in the forests.

Litany for Veterans’ Day (Call to Worship) 2026

As we quiet our minds and prepare to worship, we take time today to remember our veterans and those currently serving in the military.  Please stand as we open in prayer.

Leader: Heavenly Father, thank you for being our ever-present help in times of trouble. We thank you for the servicemen and women in our military currently serving around the globe.

Congregation: We give thanks for courage, for love of country, for those who work to bring peace to our world.

L: We ask that you would be with them and help them in times of trouble.

C : . We pray that you would draw near to them as they spend long periods of time away from their families

L:  We thank you for the freedom we enjoy because of their work.

C: Challenge us to love the warrior but hate the cost of war.

L: Give them the strength to overcome everything that stands against them today. Sustain them through your unfailing love.

All: We give thanks, Gracious God, that you remain with us as we celebrate the service of all who dared to go forth in our name. Remind us that war is a failure by us to overcome hatred with love, injustice with righteousness, violence with peace. We give thanks for those who protect us from such failures. May we truly be Your people and be makers of peace. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Leader:  Give thanks to the Lord of lords,  for his steadfast love endures forever.  Let us celebrate his steadfast love by singing, “10,000 Reasons”

Throughout Europe the remnants of the war remain, and they remember.  I am glad that through a series of events, like Veterans’ Day, we are also acknowledging and remembering the tragedy of war.
